Museum Series: Bird Vessel
Museums connect us to our past. Curators set up timelines and tell stories through artifacts, objects, and art of a time long gone. They provide us with a sense of community and belonging by promoting past human experiences and our collective cultural heritage.
I spent five weeks in Cairo this summer. To escape the heat I mostly visited museums and took pictures of anything I was allowed to photograph.
I’m obsessed with ancient pottery, so when I stumbled upon this bird pitcher I knew I had to transfer it to enamel.
I came across this piece at the Museum of Islamic Art which in itself is a historic space that opened its doors in 1903, and is located in Old Cairo.
The pitcher dates back to the 12th century AD. I tinted the beak and bottom portion of the vessel with a very thin layer of opaque aquamarine enamel. It really sings with the variscite accents! Sterling silver prong setting.
30” clasp free sterling silver chain.
One of a kind.
